Firm Leadership
______________________________________________________________________________________
All of KMW’s projects, past and present, reflect an
approach to design developed through a career-long collaboration
of Gerhard Kallmann and Michael McKinnell, with the Principals
and Associates of the firm. In addition to their architectural
practice, Kallmann and McKinnell were influential professors
of Architecture for over two decades at Harvard University’s
Graduate School of Design.
Over the last 21 years, Kallmann, McKinnell, and Wood have
been joined in their practice by a group of professionals
who share their outlook on architecture as well as their
commitment to a demanding set of design standards. Together,
they have created a notable diversity of projects for Government,
Business, Education, and the Arts.
The firm believes that the client is best served by a design
process that depends on the personal commitment of the Principals,
Senior associates, and Associates, to a continuing and responsive
dialogue with the client and their representatives throughout
the course of a project. This group includes Principals
Hans Huber, Bruno Pfister, Theodore Szostkowski, and Bruce
A. Wood; Associate Principals Kathryn MacKenzie and Stephanie
Mallis who are responsible for Project Design and Management.

Design Process
______________________________________________________________________________________
From concept, through development and into project completion,
KMW is committed to a design approach which demands the
full creative involvement of the architect and the client.
The process is one of listening, asking, analyzing and engaging
each client as a participant in design. The collaboration
explores possible physical solutions suggested from a thorough
understanding of the project’s needs and unique parameters
of the site. The shared goal is to reveal the project’s
singular nature and to discover through design an identity
that is individual and memorable.
Our success in this approach is best measured by our clients
whose opinions we encourage you to seek. Another measure
is the recognition our work has received through numerous
national and regional awards. Among them are 8 AIA Honor
Awards, 3 AIA/Brick In Architecture Awards and 18 design
awards from the Boston Society of Architects (BSA). In addition,
KMW holds 6 Harleston Parker Medals awarded jointly by the
BSA and The City of Boston for design of “the most
beautiful building” in Boston’s metropolitan
area. In 1984, KMW received the AIA Firm of the Year Award.
