Fairfax County Courthouse

The expansion of the Fairfax County Courthouse will accommodate much needed expansion space for the District and Superior Courts and permit the consolidation of all court functions in a single building. When completed, the new complex will be double the size of the current courts, providing the County with 579,000 sf of court and related judicial space - accommodating 45 courtrooms for Circuit, District, and Juvenile Courts.

Working closely with the Courts and the County, the design which evolved creates a single unified courthouse – maintaining critical adjacencies while providing clear circulation for the public and secure circulation for the staff, seamlessly connecting the new and old buildings. The addition has been sited to enclose a secure courtyard providing natural light and views into the center of this large facility.

Located in the heart of the historic district of Fairfax City, the new façade respects the historic architecture of the community yet clearly bespeaks the civic importance of the functions within.
