Project Description
The Loudoun County Courts Complex is located in the historic downtown of Leesburg, Virginia. The new Courts Complex incorporates several existing buildings and a new courtroom building into a modern, secure complex to serve the courts of Loudoun County. The construction is phased to allow the courts to continue operation.
The Courts Complex houses ten courtrooms and associated chambers for the Circuit, District and Juvenile and Domestic Relations Courts. The program also includes: offices for the three Clerks, three probation groups, jury assembly and a law library as well as secure parking for twenty cars within the building and another 400 cars off-site.
The three acre site occupies a corner at the center of the historic town. The original 1894 courthouse remains at the center of the lawn and continues to house ceremonial functions. Also occupying the site are three other buildings, varying in age, style and condition. Two of these are joined with the new building to fulfill courts’ requirements. The site fronts on four streets with three distinct characters: commercial to the south and west, residential to the north and transitional to the east. One of the major design challenges for this project was to develop an appropriate architectural image that respects the scale and historic character of its neighbors.
