“Big House” Renovation
The University sought to develop a phased master program for the expansion/ renovation of all their athletic and recreational facilities and to ultimately provide complete design services to renovate and expand historic Michigan Stadium.
Kallmann McKinnell and Wood served as a design advisor on the exterior facades of the historic brick stadium, working with executive architect HNTB. KMW provided consultation and created the schematic presentation drawings which ultimately led to the approval by the Board of Regents. This project includes the addition of two 530’ long, multistory structures on both the east and west sides of the stadium that contain improved fan amenities, new restrooms and concessions, club seats, suites, and press facilities. Two new elevated concourses were added on both sides of the stadium to improve access and safety. Other improvements to the stadium include widening existing aisles and seats, adding handrails, and adding dedicated seating for fans with impaired mobility. Renovations to the “Big House” included:
Wider seats and aisles with handrails
New elevated concourses with additional restrooms and concessions along both sidelines
Two new north buildings: restrooms, concessions and public safety services
New south building for concessions and restrooms
A new press box for media and game operations.
650+ new chairback seats on the west side.
49 suites in the west side structure
250 indoor club seats and 2,750 covered outdoor club seats
36 suites on the third level of the east side structure.
Four towers, one at the end of each sideline structure, with elevators and wide stairways to bring patrons to the new concourses and enclosed seating areas.
