United States Food & Drug Administration
Harvey W. Wiley Federal Building Center for Food Safety & Nutrition

Located in an evolving sector of College Park the building consolidates facilities of the administration in the Washington, DC region and acts as a major catalyst for the redevelopment of the area by its physical presence and a population of highly trained professionals and the visiting researchers and public it attracts.

The mandate for the design was to bring together laboratory research and office review procedures, to create spaces for interaction with international agencies and joint efforts with the University of Maryland at College Park.

The program called for 410,000 gsf of laboratories, offices and support facilities including food services, fitness center, library and an auditorium, as well as future laboratory space to be accommodated on the site. The interior organization is around a sky-lit atrium surrounded by laboratories and offices with visual cross connections, glazed openings and elevators and stairs placed in the atrium space with high visibility of people moving through the building. At the ground floor level of the atrium there is an “open” library and food service facilities are located at the entrance facing the College Park Metro Station.
